Purpose of establishment
Kyoto University Hospital devised the One-stop Bio Resource Project to develop clinical bio-resource infrastructure and established the Clinical Bio-Resource Center (hereafter referred to as the Center) in November 2017. The center is based on a Cancer bank, which contains time-series samples and high-quality clinical information on approximately 4,600 patients (as of the end of February 2019), and is conducting a tissue research project (currently the Bio-Sample Storage and Management Department), through which it has gained experience in sample storage systems.
Kyoto University, which has world-class basic research experience that facilitates seed-seeking and research support, in conjunction with SRL, Inc., Tsubakimoto Chain Co., SYSMEX Co., INTAGE Healthcare Inc., SHIMADZU Co., Fujitsu Japan Limited, and SCREEN Holdings Co., Ltd., established KBBM, Inc. (hereafter referred to as "KBBM") in March 2018 to promote new industry-academia cooperation (the "industry-in-academia" model) that utilizes each research base and business infrastructure to establish a new environment for the utilization of human biological specimens.
Kyoto University generates basic research results at the highest global level and has developed a globally advanced hospital information system. In addition, we can collect biological samples of healthy persons and formulate a medical "health" group as a comparative group by cooperating with the Preemptive Medicine and Lifestyle Related Disease Research Center. In addition, we opened the Kyoto Innovation Center for Next Generation Clinical Trials and iPS Cell Therapy (Ki-CONNECT) in the fiscal year of 2020, and ARO strengthening, industry-university cooperation strengthening, and acceleration of early search clinical tests are expected in the future.
In addition to the strengths of Kyoto University, we can complete all research, clinical studies, and clinical trials in One Stop by utilizing the strengths of seven companies. It is expected that advanced quality control, information security management, and traceability management of bio-resources will become possible, and advanced processes ranging from collection, transport, preprocessing, and storage to disposal will be constructed. In addition, we can perform omix analysis by employing a wide range of advanced analytical techniques.
The above-mentioned medical bio-resources business will contribute to medical innovation in Japan, while research and development in academia will be accelerated by utilizing resources made available by this science. This will revitalize the domestic medical industry, improve public health, and contribute to medical care worldwide.
Within this project, the center has the following roles:
- Collection, storage, and management of biological samples
- Protection of personal information
- Review of utilization of biological samples
- Support for clinical research to collect biological samples
- Clinical bio-resource storage and analytical data management
- Nurturing of personnel responsible for business
