Concept
Not just banking but providing resources
To directly benefit patients, and contribute to the development of medicine, there is a mechanism whereby a portion of blood collected in daily clinical practice and specimens obtained surgically can be provided for research use. However, it is now essential to understand human pathology from the non-clinical stage and evaluate the efficacy of drug discovery seeds in advance using higher-quality human biological samples (clinical bio-resources) and related medical care information in order to identify promising research seeds for clinical application at an early stage.
There are many institutions (biobanks) that collect and store these clinical bio-resources both in Japan and abroad, but it is also true that the use of these resources in research to treat diseases and promote early detection has not markedly progressed.
In this situation, the Clinical Bio-Resource Center began this project in November 2017 with the mission of using clinical bio-resources (resources) provided by patients and healthy people rather than just banking them (storage) .
Currently, the global rate of utilizing biobanks is only a few percent, while the rate of utilizing our centers remains extremely high, about 36% (as of March 2022).
We believe that this will bring benefits to both patients and healthy people.
Our Center will develop businesses with three strengths, as outlined below, and provide clinical bio-resources that meet the research needs of academia, companies, and other stakeholders.
- System for collecting time-series samples before and after treatment and linking with abundant clinical information
- Rapid and high-quality collection, processing, and storage systems that are fully compliant with global standards
- Industrial-in-academic ecosystems in cooperation with KBBM Co., Ltd., funded by Kyoto University
Institutional evolution
September 2013 | The Cancer Bio Bank was opened within the Cancer Center. |

October 2015 | A common clinical bio-resource storage consent form was established for use in the hospital (initiation of use). |
November 2017 | We reorganized our structure into the Clinical Bio-Resource Center to facilitate the utilization of biological specimens. Expansion of collection targets to non-cancer areas |
April 2020 | With the establishment of the Kyoto Innovation Center for Next Generation Clinical Trials and iPS Cell Therapy, the Clinical Bio-Resource Center was transferred to the Center to strengthen its collaboration with clinical development.
